New York City FC defender Alexander Callens received a red card in Tuesday's Eastern Conference Semifinal first leg in Columbus after Video Review helped identify an incident of violent conduct early in the second half.
Three minutes after the break, referee Ismail Elfath called a foul by Callens on Crew SC midfielder Justin Meram, who was marking him in the lead-up to an NYCFC corner. Replays showed the Peruvian defender raising his right elbow in the direction of Meram’s face as the ball was curled in from the left corner flag. And after Video Review Elfath issued Callens a straight red card in the 52nd minute.
It was the second instance of Video Review in the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs after a Houston Dynamo penalty kick was overturned in the Western Conference Semifinal first leg between the Houston Dynamo and Portland Timbers.
Crew SC, who were leading 1-0 at the time of the red card, went on to defeat 10-man NYCFC by a 4-1 score.
