Toronto FC Forward Sebastian Giovinco voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, August 29, 2017) – Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 25th week of the 2017 MLS season. This is his third MLS Player of the Week honor of the season.
Giovinco started the week with a goal in a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday at BMO Field followed by a brace in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo. The Italian international is tied for fourth in the Golden Boot race with 15 goals this season to go along with his six assists. Toronto sits in first place in the Supporters’ Shield and Eastern Conference standings and is in the midst of a nine-game unbeaten streak including four straight victories (56 points, 16-3-8 overall record).
The midweek bout against the Union opened with a beautiful free kick goal from Giovinco, as the forward lobbed up a perfect finish into the top right corner past goalkeeper Andre Blake to give Toronto a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute (Watch Goal).
Giovinco continued to flex his deadly free kick skills on Sunday against Montreal, as he stepped up and curled the ball just over the wall and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Toronto in the 41st minute (Watch Goal). The free kick maestro set a new MLS record with 12 direct free kick goals in a mere three seasons of play. The 2015 Landon Donovan MLS MVP winner dazzled once again in the 93rd minute when he received a beautiful cross in the box and hit an emphatic first time volley to give Toronto a decisive 3-1 victory (Watch Goal).
Toronto FC returns to action on Saturday, September 9 to host the San Jose Earthquakes at BMO Field (5 p.m. ET, TSN).
The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
