Montreal Impact midfielder Ignacio Piatti voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK (Tuesday, August 22, 2017) – Montreal Impact midfielder Ignacio Piatti was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 24th week of the 2017 MLS season.

Piatti scored two braces to lead Montreal to a pair of victories, first dispatching the Chicago Fire 3-0 in midweek action followed by a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday. This season, the Argentine midfielder has totaled 14 goals and four assists, leaving him just three goals and two assists shy of his career bests. Piatti has led the team on a four-game winning streak, scoring in each one of those games, with his 14 goals ranking tied for third in MLS this season. Montreal currently sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings (36 points, 10-8-6 overall record).

Piatti got a quick start on Wednesday’s game against Chicago. He broke through the back line and calmly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Matt Lampson to take a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute (Watch Goal). After another Montreal goal, Piatti found himself with the ball and four defenders in front of him. He sliced his way through the defense and curled a beautiful one-bouncer past Lampson to make 3-0 in the 38th minute (Watch Goal).

The Argentine put Montreal on the board in the early minutes of the match once again when hosting Real Salt Lake at Stade Saputo Saturday night. Blerim Džemaili made an explosive run in behind the back line and squared a pass to Piatti who smashed it past goalkeeper Nick Rimando to make it 1-0 in the 11th minute (Watch Goal). Real Salt Lake was able to equalize in the 27th minute, but moments later, Piatti received a short pass in the box, danced around a defender and squeezed it into the back of the net from a tight angle to give Montreal a 2-1 advantage in the 29th minute (Watch Goal). The brace was Piatti’s fourth this season and ninth in his MLS regular season career.

The Montreal Impact return to action on Sunday, August 27 in Heineken Rivalry Week II action against 401 Derby foe Toronto FC at Stade Saputo (4:30 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN Deportes, TVAS, TSN1/4/5).

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
