New York Red Bulls 4, Montreal Impact 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The New York Red Bulls might just be the hottest team in Major League Soccer.

RBNY swept aside the Montreal Impact 4-0 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday to bag their fourth consecutive victory. The Red Bulls were paced once again by Daniel Royer, who opened the scoring with a cheeky penalty-kick finish and closed out the late-breaking rout by bagging his second in the dying minutes.

Montreal weathered New York's dominance for long stretches without breaking down completely. But Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 80th career MLS goal to spark a late flurry that sent the Impact ā€“ who at least saw Ignacio Piatti return to the field as a second-half substitute ā€“ back to Quebec on the wrong end of a stinging result.

Three Things

RAGING ROYER
: It took the Austrian 20 games to score his first five MLS goals; he's now bagged six strikes in RBNY's last four matches. What happened? A
formation
change seems to have clarified everyone's roles, and brought out attributes in Royer that were previously not maximized. He earned and dispatched a penalty vs. IMFC, and had a decent claim to another as he continues to fuel New York's resurgence.

  • BWP MARKS 80: Royer and Sacha Kljestan have been the standouts of the Red Bulls' hot streak, but Wright-Phillips remains pivotal to their fortunes. His finishing is key to their system, and on Saturday he drew level with US icons Brian McBride and Josh Wolff in the all-time MLS scoring charts ā€“ but while they needed 220 and 267 games, respectively, to reach that milestone, BWP did it in 128.

  • DZEMAILI NEUTRALIZED: Midseason arrival Blerim Dzemaili has helped the Impact survive without Piatti. But on this occasion his influence was limited by Felipe, who got stuck in on the Swiss international seconds after the opening whistle and gave him limited space to operate through 90 minutes. Montreal now sit 10th in the Eastern Conference standings, eight points out of the playoff places and in dire need of a run like the one the Red Bulls are enjoying.
