Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almirón voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, May 23, 2017) – Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almirón was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 12th week of the 2017 MLS season.
Almirón recorded his first career hat trick, and the second ever in Atlanta United history, in a 4-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Sunday. The 23-year-old now leads the club in combined goals (five) and assists (four) this season after recording the second multi-goal performance of his MLS career. Atlanta improved its record to 4-0-1 in matches when Almirón records a goal or assist and now sits in ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 15 points (4-4-3 overall record).
The Paraguay National Team player gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when he received teammate Yamil Asad’s pass and found enough space to fire a blazing left-footed shot from the center of the box into the top left corner of goal (Watch Goal). Almirón would push Atlanta to a 2-0 advantage in the 42nd minute, showing tremendous control in the box to get past a trio of Houston defenders and set up a powerful left-footed shot to the top right corner (Watch Goal).
Almirón completed his hat trick in the 80th minute with a penalty kick goal, sending a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner to push Atlanta’s lead to 4-0 (Watch Goal). With the goal, Almirón helped Atlanta United become the first expansion team in league history to have two players record hat tricks in its inaugural season.
Atlanta United returns to action on Sunday, May 28 when hosting New York City FC at Bobby Dodd Stadium (5:00 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN Deportes).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
