Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, April 25, 2017) – Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the eighth week of the 2017 MLS season.
Giovinco scored the 10th brace of his MLS regular season career in Toronto’s 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire at BMO Field, improving the team to a 2-1-4 record (East #7, 10 points). On the night, Giovinco tallied 11 shots overall with six on goal, both single-game highs of any player in the 2017 MLS season. Giovinco now has three goals this season with his 34 shots and 13 shots on goal both leading the league.
The 2015 Landon Donovan MLS MVP opened the scoring with a shot from the top of the box in the 28th minute to give Toronto a 1-0 advantage. Surrounded by defenders, Giovinco dribbled and created just enough space to fire a right-footed shot to the near post past goalkeeper Jorge Bava (Watch Goal).
Giovinco would complete his brace with an incredible free kick goal from outside the box, perfectly placing a powerful strike into the top left corner to give Toronto a 3-0 lead in the 82nd minute (Watch Goal). Dating back to July 2016, Toronto FC is now undefeated in its previous 12 regular season matches in which Giovinco has recorded a goal or an assist, compiling a 9-0-3 record.
Toronto FC returns to action this Friday, April 28 when it hosts the Houston Dynamo at BMO Field (7:30 p.m. ET, TSN 4/5; MLS Live).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
