There won’t be another comeback for Landon Donovan.
The American soccer legend confirmed to Yahoo Sports on Thursday that he is officially retired and won’t play again after making a brief comeback for the LA Galaxy last season.
“Yeah, I’m done,” Donovan told Yahoo. “I’m done. No more playing for me.”
Donovan, 35, first retired in December 2014 after winning a record sixth MLS Cup (his fourth with the Galaxy), but came out of retirement last September after LA suffered a rash of late-season injuries. He recorded one goal in six regular-season appearances for LA last year, and tallied an assist in three playoff starts.
The all-time leading scorer in MLS and US men’s national team history, Donovan was reportedly in talks this winter to sign with Real Salt Lake, but didn’t end up signing for the club.
He’s now working with the MLS expansion bid in San Diego and will be involved in FS1’s broadcast of the US-Honduras World Cup qualifier on Friday night (10:30pm ET | FS1, UniMás), but, prior to Thursday, hadn’t made an official statement on whether or not he would continue playing.
