It didn't take long for Nicolas Lodeiro to completely take MLS by storm.
The Seattle Sounders midfielder, who made his MLS debut on July 31, was named Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month on Thursday. Lodeiro has been absolutely dominant since entering the league, propelling the Sounders back into the playoff race with two goals and six assists in five matches in August.
The Uruguayan international beat out some of the league’s biggest stars to claim the award, taking home 45.8 percent of the vote to smash New York Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips (21.11 percent), D.C. United’s Patrick Mullins (17.14 percent) and Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco (11.58 percent) and Jozy Altidore (4.37 percent).
The five Etihad Airways Player of the Month finalists are selected at the end of each month by the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff. The winner is then determined by a fan vote.
Lodeiro is currently with Uruguay for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers at Argentina and against Paraguay. He’ll return to Seattle following the Paraguay match on Sept. 6 and could be available for the Sounders' next match, a Sept. 10 encounter at San Jose.
