MLS Disciplinary Committee suspends Ellis, Bolanos, fines Muyl

Kevin Ellis, Sporting Kansas City, and Blas Perez, Vancouver Whitecaps, battle for the ball

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced on Wednesday that they have suspended Sporting Kansas City’s Kevin Ellis and Vancouver’s Christian Bolaños and the New York Red Bulls’ Alex Muyl for actions taken in Week 24 of the MLS season.

Ellis contact on Barnes

Kevin Ellis has been suspended for Sporting’s match at the Philadelphia Union on Saturday (7 pm ET; MLS LIVE) for making contact with the head of Vancouver forward Giles Barnes in SKC’s 2-0 win over the ‘Caps at Children’s Mercy Park last weekend.

Ellis came across from his center back position and made contact with Barnes’ head with a raised forearm after the Jamaican international skated past SKC’s Graham Zusi on the left wing in the ninth minute of last Saturday’s match. Ellis was shown a yellow card on the play, but the Committee suspended him after ruling that the action was “violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent.”

Bolaños contact on Zusi

Christian Bolaños has been suspended for Vancouver’s match at the LA Galaxy on Saturday (10:30 pm ET; TSN 1/4/5, RDS in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US) for making contact with the back of Graham Zusi’s head in the 53rd minute of Vancouver’s loss at SKC last weekend.

Bolaños appeared to elbow Zusi in the back of the head after the US international collected a loose ball in Sporting’s defensive third and made a pass up field. A card wasn’t shown on the play, but the Committee ruled that the action was “violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent” and suspended Bolaños for one match.

Muyl embellishment

The Committee has issued an undisclosed fine to Muyl after finding him guilty of embellishment in the New York Red Bulls’ 2-2 draw at D.C. United last Sunday.

The incident in question came in the 47th minute, when Muyl went down while challenging for a long ball with D.C.’s Taylor Kemp.
