New York City FC relishing chance to play against one of MLS's best in LA

PURCHASE, N.Y. ā€“ Saturdayā€™s showdown against the LA Galaxy (3 pm ET; ESPN in US | MLS LIVE in Canada) is another challenge, another chance for New York City FC to prove they are primed for a deep MLS Cup playoff run.

In similar marquee games this year, NYCFC has had mixed results. There was the famous 7-0 drubbing to the New York Red Bulls, a 3-1 win over the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo and a stunning 5-1 victory against the Colorado Rapids.

The LA Galaxyā€™s first-ever trip to Yankee Stadium brings about a similar test for the Eastern Conference leaders.

ā€œWhen theyā€™re going forward they have some strength one-against-one, theyā€™ve got pace, people who really understand the game, who can finish as well,ā€ NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira said. ā€œItā€™s a really good team, no doubt about it, one of the best teams in the league.ā€

Of course, both teams have star power, with David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo on one side and Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane and Giovani dos Santos on the other.

The chance to go head-to-head with Gerrard is especially big for NYCFC rookie Jack Harrison, who grew up a Liverpool fan.

ā€œIā€™ve always looked forward to that game,ā€ Harrison said. ā€œItā€™s the LA Galaxy and then on top of that itā€™s Steven Gerrard. Heā€™s always been an idol of mine, being a part of Liverpool so Iā€™m excited to get that opportunity.ā€

The LA Galaxy are level on points with NYCFC, but 38 points is only good for third place in the Western Conference, seven behind the pace set by FC Dallas.

In addition to a star-studded roster, the LA Galaxy brings a nine-match unbeaten streak, which includes three consecutive draws. Their last loss was 1-0 to Toronto FC; it was also their last trip to the East Coast.

Although losing Brian Roweto injury is a blow, the LA Galaxy also brings the second stingiest defense in MLS (just 23 goals conceded in 23 matches) to the Bronx in Bruce Arenaā€™s homecoming.

ā€œIā€™m really looking forward to it because weā€™re playing a good team, one of the best, if not the best, managers in the league full of experience, they have individual quality on the field and it will be a big challenge for us,ā€ Vieira said.

Vieira, who played with Ashley Cole at Arsenal, is also looking forward to reuniting with hard-tackling midfielder Nigel de Jong, a former teammate at Manchester City.

ā€œHeā€™s a really good friend of mine,ā€ Vieira said of de Jong. ā€œI love him and I respect his determination, his willingness to win 50-50. I think heā€™s a really good player for MLS.ā€
