San Jose Earthquakes 0, New York City FC 0 | 2016 MLS Match Recap

The San Jose Earthquakes and New York City FC played to a scoreless stalemate at Avaya Stadium on Friday.

Both sides had looks on the night, but either missed the target, had shots blocked before they reached the goalkeepers, or couldn't beat San Jose's David Bingham or NYCFC's Josh Saunders in goal.

Quakes star Chris Wondolowski had the highest volume of good chances, especially in the second half, but could not continue his march up the MLS all-time scoring ranks in this game.

Even with the draw, both sides maintain unbeaten streaks in MLS regular season play, with San Jose on a four-game run and NYCFC now two games unbeaten. NYCFC added to their league-best away record (6-4-2, 20 points), with more points away from home than at Yankee Stadium (17).

Box Score

Three Things

  1. NO GOALS: The Quakes outshot the visitors 19-10, won six more corner kicks (9) and whipped in 34 crosses (compared to eight for NYCFC), but forwards Chris Wondolowski, Chad Barrett and Quincy Amarikwa couldn't find the back of the net despite some good chances. Wondolowski had six shots on the night and was foiled by a spectacular sliding block from NYCFC defender Maxime Chanot on his best look with six minutes remaining.
  2. CEREN MAKES QUAKES DEBUT: After being traded from Orlando City on Wednesday in a deadline-day deal, midfielder Darwin Ceren made his debut for San Jose on Friday, coming off the bench to play the final eight minutes for his new side in place of Fatai Alashe. Expect him to slot into the starting XI sooner rather than later.
  3. TRIBUTE TO HERNANDEZ: NYCFC defender Jason Hernandez may be a New Jersey guy, but he spent the bulk of his MLS career to date -- a total of seven seasons -- with the Earthquakes. San Jose fans paid tribute to Hernandez's stint with the club with a banner on his return to the Bay Area:
