MLS Fantasy Boss: Now is the time to load up on New York City FC stars

Now THIS is what we expected, and hoped for, from a Double Game Week (aka DGW)! Big point returns from our premium players, little rotation of proven point generators, and the highest average point returns of the season, so far. If you were like me, then you were very happy to see a three digit score after a few rough rounds, but nobody is happier than Adrian Armstrong, who scored 165 points with his team XAYMACA and earned the $25 gift card to the MLS store. Congrats!

Before you let all of this celebration go to your head, remember that Round 11 starts on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 PM, so you’ll want to have your transfers lined up ASAP! This is also the last round that we will see many of the marquee players as they get ready to depart for their Copa America training camps.  This means you’ll need to find a balance in your team so you don’t get caught having to take point penalties for too many transfers come Round 13. These are some players I think will help:

Goalkeeper

DGW Option: With many teams on a bye in Round 13, you’ll want to be sure you have a goalkeeper who will play, and Josh Saunders ($5.1) tops my list. Not only are NYCFC on a hot streak right now, but Saunders is on the edge of being one of the top five highest scoring ‘keepers, and a DGW always provides the potential for a strong score.

Defenders

DGW Option: If you took one lesson from the Round 10 DGW, it’s that a double home game deserves respect. This week, it’s Toronto that has that coveted schedule. Once again this means Drew Moor ($7.4) is one of the few premium defenders worth investing in. For the price you get a defender who can generate bonus points, has earned three clean sheets, and scored a goal over his last five games.

Long Term: With two DGWs and a couple of home games over the next five weeks, many managers should start considering adding Philadelphia Union players to their team and if you’re looking for a value defender, Keegan Rosenberry ($5.8) is the one to target. His bonus point production makes him the clear stand out over the other high-priced Philly options and you could always get lucky with another goal.

Midfielders

DGW Value: If you want to find the midfielder that can give you the most bang for your buck, then pick up Tommy McNamara ($7.4). Over his last four games, he’s scored one goal, earned three assists, and has quickly become NYC’s second highest-scoring player. Investing in McNamara now could continue to pay off big thanks to City’s promising schedule.

One Shot: While many managers may shy away from Copa America players, Michael Bradley ($10.3) is definitely one worth bringing in. Out of 10 games, Bradley has only earned one assist yet his he’s scored fewer than five points only ONE time. This is a great point floor that few players are able to achieve – just be sure have a replacement in mind.

Back in Action: After starting the season with two goals, David Accam ($9.1) was sidelined thanks to a knee injury picked up before Round 3. He seems to be recovered now and played 45 minutes in Round 10. This is not just great news for Chicago, but any Fantasy manager who is looking for a differential player with the proven ability to enhance a team’s attack and score goals.

Forwards

Must Have: While some manager rage sold David Villa ($11.6) earlier, those who stuck with the Spaniard have been rewarded by earning points from his four goals over the past three rounds. All forwards are boom and bust, Villa has an excellent chance for more points as he plays five games over the next four weeks, including four at home.

DGW Differential: If you’re ready to take a little risk over the next couple of weeks, then consider Bradley Wright-Phillips ($10.7), who has scored three goals over his last four games. The Red Bulls also have one of the easier Double Games this week and that gives them a good shot to rekindle the fire of their comeback run from the bottom half of the table.

These are the players I think are going to stand out in Round 11, who are you targeting?
