Best left mid in Germany? Fabian Johnson earning praise for strong season

Fabian Johnson - American Exports - Borussia Monchengladbach

Fabian Johnson is putting the finishing touches on perhaps his finest season as a professional, as the Borussia Monchengladbach winger will wrap a sparkling campaign for the Foals this weekend against at SV Darmstadt.

Johnson has appeared in 26 of Monchengladbach’s 33 regular-season matches this year, registering a career-high six goals and four assists in Bundesliga play and adding two more goals in UEFA Champions League action.

He’s been widely regarded as one of the top wingers in the entire Bundesliga this season, something the German league gave a bit of credence to when they tweeted out a poll including Johnson as one of their options for best left midfielder of the year.

Johnson will likely  play a huge role for the US national team at this summer’s Copa America Centenario, though where he’ll slot in may be up for debate.

Despite his ability on the wing, USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has often played the versatile FabJo at fullback. Just where he uses Johnson this summer could go a long way in determining how successful the US are in the historic tournament.
