Columbus Crew SC set to add Panamanian midfielder Christian Martinez

Gregg Berhalter - Columbus Crew SC

Columbus Crew SC are in need of some help, and they look to soon be getting some in the form of a promising Panamanian teenager.

Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter told reporters on Monday that the club was working on putting the finishing touches on a loan deal for 19-year-old midfielder Christian Martinez. Berhalter did say Martinez cannot be added to Columbus' roster until the club frees up an international spot, which it is expected to do in the coming days when Waylon Francis receives a green card.

Martinez, who is also capable of playing in defense, currently represents Chorrillo FC of Panama's first division. He recently made his international debut by appearing in a pair of friendlies earlier this year.

Crew SC could use a boost. The reigning Eastern Conference champions are 2-4-2 about a quarter of the way through the season, and have scored just seven goals thus far.
