Reports claim LA Galaxy, NYCFC eyeing standout Eredivisie midfielder

New reports out of the Netherlands have linked New York City FC and the LA Galaxy to one of the most highly-regarded young midfielders in the Eredivisie.

Gregor Breinburg has played a leading role in NEC Nijmegen's impressive return to the top flight in 2015/16 following one season in the Eerste Divisie (second tier), helping the promoted side climb mid-table and remain in outside contention for third place and the Europa League qualification berth it offers.

This week local outlet De Gelderlander claimed that the 24-year-old Breinburg – born in the Netherlands but a capped member of the Aruba national team, thanks to his familial links to the Dutch Caribbean island – is on the radar of NYCFC, then later amended the report to list the Galaxy. It also named Czech outfit Sparta Prague and unnamed English Premier League clubs as potential suitors.

Described by one Dutch soccer site as “one of the most complete midfielders in the Eredivisie mixing defensive awareness and the ability to keep things ticking over in midfield,” the report posits that Breinburg is under contract with NEC until 2018 and would thus be subject to a transfer fee.
