Jerseys

Discuss: What is your favorite MLS throwback jersey?

Welcome to another edition of our new weekly series, "Discuss." We'll be turning out sights on the talking points, debates, hot takes or whatever we feel like talking about around MLS, the US and Canadian national teams, and soccer around the world. Sometimes we'll mostly agree, and other times ... not so much.

This week we'll turn to Simon Borg, Andrew Wiebe, Nick Rosano, Ben Baer, Arielle Castillo, and Ben Couch to argue for their favorite MLS throwback jerseys as teams continue their 20th anniversary celebrations.

BORG: 1996 NY/NJ MetroStars home jersey

How many black and white kits have we seen in MLS outside those the first few years of the MetroStars? Big opportunity for upcoming expansion teams, if you ask me. The shiny finish on this one from 1996 gives it a unique 90s touch. Personally, I'm shocked the black-and-white cookie kit only had a one-year run.

WIEBE: 1998 Kansas City Wizards away jersey

Long live the rainbow. You really can’t go wrong (or some might say right) with the spectrum-splashing jerseys the KC Wiz and Kansas City trotted out back in the day, but my favorite iteration hit the field in 1998. Love the black, the wavy lines and the the way the color palette spills onto the shorts.

ROSANO: 1996 Dallas Burn home jersey

I've always been partial to red but let's be real – that's not the point here. Nothing strikes fear into opposing players (or Pokemon masters) quite like a fire-breathing horse. Is it gimmicky? Sure. But does perfectly capture the spirit of the 90s and the club's name? Absolutely. Would I wear this in a pickup game? You know it.

BAER: 1998 D.C. United third jersey

We don't often talk about sleeves when discussing jerseys, but that is not the case with the 1998 D.C. United third jersey. The stripes on the sleeves of these jerseys earned  them the nickname of the “Cat in the Hat” jerseys.

CASTILLO: 1996 Tampa Bay Mutiny home jersey

I wanna pick either the 1996 Mutiny or the Clash just because they are sooooo 90s. Would never wear, but the font alone on the Mutiny one kills me. In a loving, nostalgic for the 1990s way.

COUCH: 2007 Toronto FC away jersey

Love the grey. Also, the striping looks like a snake head, which 15-year-old jersey-buying me really appreciates.
