Brad Davis opened his Sporting Kansas City account to give his new team a 1-0 win Sunday night over Toronto FC at Children’s Mercy Park.
The 70th-minute goal from the former Houston Dynamo man, taking a Dom Dwyer feed to cut it inside the far post, broke up a nip-and-tuck match in the intraconference meeting to give Sporting their third win in as many matches to start the 2016 season.
The loss ends Toronto’s two-game unbeaten streak, one win and two draws, to start the season.
Toronto nearly got on the board first in the in the 62nd minute when Tsubasa Endoh sent in a right-footed shot that Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia was narrowly able to get a piece of to send off the crossbar and over.

- DAVIS STAYS HOT: Davis’ game-winner may have been the US international’s first with his new team, following his offseason trade from longtime club Houston Dynamo, but it continues a trend that spans to last season. Davis had scored three of his four goals last season in his final nine games with Houston.
- SPORTING STRONG: Kansas City are three for three in 2016, and it hasn’t really been close. Sporting have never trailed this season as they look to respond from their Knockout-Round loss to eventual MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers in last season’s MLS Cup Playoffs. The 2013 league champions beat Seattle 1-0 in the opening weekend and went up 2-0 before pulling out a 2-1 win last weekend against Vancouver leading into Sunday’s match.
- MISSED CHANCES: Toronto outshot Sporting 12-7 on the night (4-3 on target), and it could have been a much different story if not for an inch or two here or there when first-year TFC forward Endoh had a golden chance on goal redirected off the crossbar by Melia to keep the game scoreless in the 62nd minute. It would have been the first professional goal from the rookie who was drafted out the University of Maryland with the ninth overall pick of the 2016 SuperDraft.
