MLS Power Rankings, Week 2: San Jose make huge jump after defeating champs

BIGGEST MOVERS: San Jose +7 spots  | New York, Seattle -5 spots

1

LAST WEEK: 4

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 8

So far they look like the league's best team, and it's not all that close. Montreal have been able to rip defenses apart with their passing, and their front line has been finishing just fine without Mr. Drogba.

Latest result: Won vs. New York, 3-0

Next MLS match: Saturday at Dallas

2

LAST WEEK: 1

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 2

It took a true golazo from Quincy Amarikwa to beat the champs. But there's reason to worry now that Liam Ridgwell is out until April with a hamstring strain, as the backline was leaky in his absence.

Latest result: Lost at San Jose, 2-1

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Real Salt Lake

3

LAST WEEK: 3

HIGH: 3 | LOW: 6

Got thrown a curve ball by NYCFC but turned it into a solid double with a second-half rally. TFC have proved to be smart and flexible, but they're missing Jozy Altidore right now.

4

LAST WEEK: 9

HIGH: 4 | LOW: 11

Two games, two wins and no real complaints. Sooner or later, though, they're going to have to do it against a team playing with 11 men.

Latest result: Won vs. Vancouver, 2-1

Next MLS match: Sunday vs. Toronto (FS1)

5

LAST WEEK: 2

HIGH: 2 | LOW: 5

Until they give us reason to think otherwise, we're writing this result off as their typical early-season blip. Remember when they got crushed by the Rapids last year? Same thing.

Latest result: Lost at Houston, 5-0

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Montreal

6

LAST WEEK: 13

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 14

For the second straight week, they took a lead, then battened down the hatches for the game's final 15 minutes. For the second straight week, it worked. But at some point, they'll have to start using the ball to kill off results.

Latest result: Won vs. Portland, 2-1

Next MLS match: Saturday at LA Galaxy

7

LAST WEEK: 6

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 9

Obviously Daniel Steres has to do better with that clearance, and obviously the Galaxy need to figure out how to generate some midfield creativity. But Robbie Rogers … you've gotta track that run.

Latest result: Lost at Colorado, 1-0

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. San Jose

8

LAST WEEK: 5

HIGH: 3 | LOW: 8

For the second straight week, they took nearly 20 shots, and for the second straight week, they took an L. That won't happen many more times, but they could really, really use a shutout.

Next MLS match: Saturday at Chicago

9

LAST WEEK: 15

HIGH: 9 | LOW: 15

A huge jump after Jamison Olave's huge jump. Jeff Cassar & Co. must've had a good, long exhale after holding onto a late result for the first time all year.

Latest result: Won vs. Seattle, 2-1

Next MLS match: Saturday at Portland

10

LAST WEEK: 16

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 17

There aren't many rivalry games in MLS history as one-sided as what Houston did to Dallas. Basically everything went right on Saturday -- now they just have to bottle that and bring it up to New Jersey.

Latest result: Won vs. Dallas, 5-0

11

LAST WEEK: 8

HIGH: 5 | LOW: 11

This team still has all kinds of upside, but it's hard to ignore the glaring hole at right back. Two weeks into the season, and we've seen two opponents ruthlessly exploit that particular weak spot.

Latest result: Lost at Sporting KC, 2-1

Next MLS match: Saturday at Seattle (TSN1)

12

LAST WEEK: 7

HIGH: 4 | LOW: 12

The breakdowns at the back are worrisome, but the lack of a cutting edge in attack is a real problem. RBNY went through something similar last year, so it's not time to panic -- yet.

Latest result: Lost at Montreal, 3-0

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Houston

13

LAST WEEK: 12

HIGH: 12 | LOW: 16

Went for it with a delightfully anachronistic attempt at the century-old WM formation and scrapped together a point for their efforts.

Latest result: Drew vs. Toronto FC, 2-2

14

LAST WEEK: 10

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 14

Forced Travis Worra into an outstanding performance and were denied by the woodwork several times as well. Make no mistake, though: This was a disappointing weekend.

Latest result: Drew vs. D.C. United, 0-0

Next MLS match: Sunday at Philadelphia

15

LAST WEEK: 14

HIGH: 12 | LOW: 15

Went up a man and a goal, but still couldn't come away with more than a point. Orlando City quite obviously miss Kaká, but their defensive frailty may actually be a bigger long-term concern.

Latest result: Drew vs. Chicago, 1-1

16

LAST WEEK: 11

HIGH: 7 | LOW: 16

Two games, two losses and about a half-dozen injuries. This is a nightmare start to the season, and they'll get a chance to rectify it against a similarly desperate Cascadia rival this weekend.

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Vancouver

17

LAST WEEK: 19

HIGH: 17 | LOW: 19

It's nice to see Chris Pontius healthy again. It's also probably very nice for Philly fans to watch Andre Blake in goal and think, "We're not going to have to draft another 'keeper for a very long time." Right?

Latest result: Won at Columbus, 2-1

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. New England

18

LAST WEEK: 20

HIGH: 18 | LOW: 20

Colorado got the win, which is always nice. But they also whipped in 20 crosses and connected on just two, which suggests they need A) a little more midfield creativity, and B) a tactical re-think.

Latest result: Won vs. LA Galaxy, 1-0

19

LAST WEEK: 17

HIGH: 13 | LOW: 19

In their last eight games across all competitions -- stretching back to last season -- they're 1-5-2 and have been outscored 15-4. Posting a road shutout is good, but it may have hidden a few painful truths.

Latest result: Drew at New England, 0-0

Next MLS match: Sunday vs. Colorado (ESPN2)

20

LAST WEEK: 18

HIGH: 18 | LOW: 20

Can't argue with a road point, especially given the circumstances. The Power Rankings Politburo hopes we get to see more of that 3-5-2 the Fire started with, before Michael Harrington saw red.

Latest result: Drew at Orlando City, 1-1

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Columbus
