Maurice Edu leads Philadelphia Union XI onto field

Philadelphia Union captain Maurice Edu will be out 3-4 months due to a stress fracture in his left leg, according to club head coach Jim Curtin.

Edu, who missed most of the Union’s preseason training while recovering from offseason sports hernia surgery, did not play in Philadelphia’s season-opening loss at FC Dallas on Sunday.

Edu, 29, joined Philadelphia from English Premier League club Stoke City in January 2014. He’s played in 53 MLS regular season matches with the Union, splitting time between center back and defensive midfield. A member of the US team at the 2010 World Cup and one of the final cuts for the 2014 tournament, Edu has 46 career caps with the USMNT.
