Minnesota United offers first glimpse of new stadium's "urban village" plan

When Minnesota United FC enter MLS as an expansion team, the club will need a stadium. On Thursday, they provided a first glimpse of what that stadium may look like.

Minnesota United owner Bill McGuire revealed a mixed-use site plan in St. Paul that would feature housing, retail shops and restaurants in an ā€œurban villageā€ surrounding the proposed stadium, the Star Tribune reports. The planned development site is 34.5 acres, or about 12 downtown blocks.

ā€œWe're putting a soccer stadium in a place that we think is great for the state, for the community and for the Twin Cities,ā€ McGuire said, according to FOX 9.

The proposed venue still has plenty of details to flesh out before the city council in St. Paul takes a vote in July, and the city is currently studying the traffic impact of the proposal.

Renderings of what the actual 20,000-capacity stadium's design may look like are expected to be released later this month. McGuire has said the stadium will be partially covered to protect spectators from the elements.

Minnesota United were announced as an MLS expansion team in March with entrance into the league expected either next year or in 2018.
