Charlie Davies pushes the ball home against Toronto FC

We know all about Charlie Davies, the soccer player.

We know about his early career European exploits, his quick success with the US national team and the car wreck that took one life and nearly ended his. We know about his lengthy comeback from the debilitating injuries suffered in that crash, the struggles to find his form once he got back on the field and his renewed success at home with the New England Revolution.

We didn’t know, until now, about Charlie Davies, the person.

USA Today’s “For the Win” published a deep-dive on Davies on Tuesday morning, with Nate Scott highlighting the 29-year-old striker’s journey – from his tumultuous childhood with a father struggling with drug addiction and mother battling a mental illness all the way through to his current run with the Revs.

The long piece is worth a read in its entirety.
