Josh Lambo's wild ride through American professional sports became even more interesting over the weekend: the former FC Dallas goalkeeper kicked a game-winning field goal in the dying seconds to push the San Diego Chargers past the Cleveland Browns in NFL Week 4 action.
Lambo, an NFL rookie out of Texas A&M, turned to gridiron football after his pro soccer career wound to a close in 2012. Last month, he turned heads upon beating out veteran Nick Novak to become the Chargers' kicker. And on Sunday, Lambo got his first chance to play hero with 2 seconds remaining, lining up to take a 39-yard kick with the score tied, 27-27, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
And he missed.
Luckily for Lambo, the Browns were whistled for offsides on the play, and he drilled take two right down the middle. San Diego improved to 2-2 on the season.
“Thankfully I got a second chance,” said a relieved Lambo, after the game. “I missed the first one and I just started laughing. Then I saw a flag on the field and said. 'Oh, OK, let's try again.'”
Lambo's superstar teammates recognized and applauded his resolve.
“He stepped up,” said quarterback Philip Rivers. “That was big for him early in his career because we are going to need him down the stretch.”
