MLS Save of the Week: Week 28

The candidates for the Week 28 edition of MLS Save of the Week feature a pair of fine kick saves, some stunning work to deflect rocket shots off the woodwork and two different Sporting Kansas City goalkeepers. Now it’s your turn to decide which one deserves top honors.

SKC rotated ‘keepers in their two games last week, starting Tim Melia in their scoreless draw at Portland last Wednesday before bringing in backup Jon Kempin in relief of the banged-up starter for Sunday’s match at Orlando. Melia was massive in SKC’s tie with the Timbers, making seven stops – including his Save of the Week nominated kick save on Fanendo Adi – to keep Kansas City in the match. Kempin couldn’t quite match Melia’s heroics in SKC’s 3-1 loss at Orlando, but the Homegrown ‘keeper did earn a Save of the Week nomination for his reaction stop on Lewis Neal.

Both goalies from Columbus Crew SC’s 2-1 win at the Philadelphia Union are in the running, with Crew SC’s Steve Clark nominated for his outstretched stop that deflected Sebastien Le Toux’s chipped shot off the crossbar and the Union’s John McCarthy in the field for touching Justin Meram’s blast off the post.

Nick Rimando is also in contention, with the Real Salt Lake ‘keeper seeking his third Save of the Week win of the year for his kick save on Ricardo Clark’s close-range effort in the Claret-and-Cobalt’s 3-1 win at Houston.

Which save was your favorite? Vote now – the winner will be announced on Friday.
