Columbus Crew SC's Kei Kamara paces Golden Boot; LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane shoots up table

In an offensive week for the top scorers, the race for the Golden Boot continues to heat up.

Columbus Crew SC striker Kei Kamara remains the current leader, scoring on Wednesday to stay ahead of Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco, who converted an impressive free kick Saturday to match, as did NYCFC's David Villa on Sunday. The action is heating up most at the bottom of the chart, where LA Galaxy star Robbie Keane added a brace – and another in Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday – and Chris Wondolowski took full advantage of the San Jose Earthquakes' double-game week.

Our weekly look at the standings from here shows Keane joining the top three after six goals in LA's last four MLS matches, with Wondo bursting ahead of last year's Golden Boot winner, Bradley Wright-Phillips, following three goals in a week the New York Red Bulls were scheduled off. But just seven games remain on the Galaxy fixture, and Keane will have to continue this staggering run if he's to catch Kamara, who holds a game in hand, or Giovinco, who's got three.

We'll leave the offside question for Instant Replay, but Kamara's tally helped push Crew SC to a midweek draw, and kept him atop the standings for a second straight week. He'll have a chance to add to his ledger against a struggling NYCFC side in Saturday's rematch.

Giovinco's free kick was so nice, we had to see it twice – and you can vote for it in Goal of the Week! Seba broke through after a pair of scoreless outings, and we all know he can turn it up in a hurry. With Montreal on Saturday's docket, a tally in front of the home fans would be well-timed.

With a double-game week, Villa was primed to push the top two, and managed only to match their single goals. His penalty against Crew SC helped NYCFC earn the draw, and Saturday's rematch provides a head-to-head opportunity to challenge Kamara's lead.

Well. That was a week. And quite the stretch for Keane, who's up to six goals in LA's last four games. He's in true striking distance of the top, but the 2014 MLS MVP is running out of games.

Can he make it a third straight brace in the California Clasico? Unlikely: the Quakes haven't allowed a goal in 294 minutes ... and counting.

A midweek brace against one of the best in the West, including goal No. 100 with the Quakes, was followed by a fourth-minute opener against D.C. United. With those three tallies, not only did Wondolowski become the first MLS player to hit double-digits in six straight seasons, but also recast the competition at the bottom of this top-shelf table.
