Fantasy Doctor: Finding the best values with one more round of Gold Cup absences

Dan Kennedy - Fantasy Doctor

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is almost over, with just the third-place match between the US and Panama and the final between Mexico and Jamaica remaining. For MLS Fantasy players, that means one more round without the likes of Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley. It also means that MLS coaches will soon have to make tough decisions about the players who showed well while international players were away with their countries.

Take someone like Toronto FC’s Marco Delgado ($5.6). Selected by 0.6 percent of fantasy managers, he’s gotten five starts and scored two goals while Bradley has been away. He could be a smart pickup with Toronto on a Double Game Week in Round 23, but will he still get minutes when Bradley returns?

Gold Cup replacement standouts aren’t the only overlooked players in MLS Fantasy. Dan Kennedy ($4.9) has bounced back from a rough stretch with three clean sheets in FC Dallas' four-game winning streak. With FCD hosting Portland, who have struggled to score on the road, he’s a solid option for those needing an affordable goalkeeper this weekend.

These hidden gems were found with help from a reader. In an effort to continue my fantasy education, this week I asked readers for their fantasy tips via Twitter.

If you think you have a bit of Fantasy advice for me, I’m always looking to learn. Mike Gray sent in this helpful hint, which gives further context to this week’s advice:

“Want to know the true value of players you might look to transfer in? First check the Points Per Game tab to calculate their real production, then check Value (Form) to see who’s hot at the moment”

While most of us know to look for a player’s production via PPG, getting an accurate read on who is in form now can be more difficult. Kennedy tops the list of all players in the Value (Form) tab, and should be a hit this weekend. Delgado tops the list for Toronto, but there’s a question of whether his hot form will continue once the Gold Cup is over.

We’ll make this a seminar week, giving you a peek at my fantasy team instead of bringing in a patient of the week. You can see I already brought in Kennedy, but I’m still trying to decide on my second transfer.

Last round went well as my Crew SC members led the Tinkerballers to well above the average score. Steven Gerrard was also a boon in his debut, and you can never go wrong with Benny Feilhaber.

Any suggestions for my second transfer? What did you think of the Twitter tip? Let me know in the comments below!
