Tim Howard announces intention to return to USMNT pool following Gold Cup

Tim Howard

Tim Howard is coming back.

The longtime US goalkeeper is nearing the end of his year-long hiatus from international play, telling EvertonFC.com on Wednesday that he plans on making himself available for selection for the USMNT following the conclusion of the Gold Cup.

Howard, who said he has spoke with US national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann as recently as last week, said that he hopes to return to the USMNT in September, when they take on Peru at RFK Stadium.

"We'll speak after [the Gold Cup] finishes and certainly I will make myself available for selection and put my name in the hat," said Howard.

"I have [missed it]. It was a tough decision for me but it's been a good break. All it's done is to fuel my fire to get back in there. I have missed the boys, the competition and playing in front of the US fans."

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan has taken over Howard's starting spot since the 36-year-old began his international break last August, with the younger Guzan playing all four matches so far at this summer's Gold Cup.

The Everton 'keeper made 42 appearances across all competitions for the Toffees during the 2014-15 season and is expected to retain his starting spot for the upcoming season.
