MLS Fantasy Doctor: A word of caution on double game weeks, exploring midfield bargains

With yet another MLS Fantasy double match week upon us, the obvious course of action is going to be adding D.C. United players. Only a fool would tell you to expect the unexpected, but allow me to be that fool for just a moment.

Ten weeks are in the books, and we’ve yet to have a double match week go according to plan. How many Fantasy managers bet on David Bingham being good for 18 points when the Quakes took their act on the road for two games? Saving that Giles Barnes penalty was quite the Fantasy point swing.

Don’t forget that Orlando City do have a home match in this swing, against a struggling LA Galaxy side. Orlando gets a clean sheet in one of their two games this week, and suddenly picking up a Sebastian Hines ($7.5) makes you look like a genius.

In honor of the double match week, I’m going to welcome two patients into my office. Our first submission comes from Chad Arnett. Put your feet up, grab a cuppa and let’s see what can be done to help.

Dear MLS Fantasy Doctor,
My team has gone from one of the best to a train wreck. What can you do to help me?

Step one is going to be moving Josh Saunders. The New York City FC goalkeeper hasn’t recorded a clean sheet since round three. His early success saw him gain $0.2 from his initial valuation, but he’s starting to come back down to earth.

Let’s go with a Stefan Frei ($5.6) while you still have that extra cash. Even in a 3-2 defeat over the past weekend, Frei was good for six points with save and defensive bonuses. He’ll be active against Vancouver, and then the Sounders get two winnable games at home.

You’ve gone the inexpensive route with your defenders, but you can save some scratch and take advantage of the double match week adding D.C.’s Kofi Opare ($5.1). I’d use that extra cash in the weeks to come for upgrading your other defenders.

Our bonus submission comes from MLSsoccer.com’s own Sarah Lerner! I wanted to help our resident social diva, so let’s take a look at her current MLS Fantasy team:

We’ve got another example here of good midfield balance, but unfortunately that doesn’t include Luis Silva. He’s one part a handful of forward/midfielder hybrids in the MLS Fantasy-verse, but Ben Olsen’s been bringing him back so gradually I don’t have a lot of faith in him being the best way to take advantage of double point opportunities.

Let’s go with Perry Kitchen ($7.6) instead, which is a $0.9 savings and much more likely to feature over the two games. He’s only made it onto the scoresheet in one game this season but getting his first assist last weekend is a positive sign.

Jeb Brovsky has an amazing mustache. That has nothing to do with Fantasy but needed to be said. Still, we should transfer him out to try my gamble of the week. Sebastian Hines is only on 0.5% of Fantasy teams, so if it works I’m clearly a genius.

Hope this has been helpful!
