New York City FC midfielder Pablo Alvarez earns praise from Jason Kreis after making first start

NEW YORK – David Villa has two goals and one assist in his debut season in Major League Soccer. But the New York City FC Designated Player’s biggest contribution might have been helping land friend and former teammate Pablo Alvarez on a free transfer.

Alvarez made his first MLS start Sunday night and impressed despite New York City FC dropping a 3-1 decision to the Seattle Sounders FC. The 34-year-old native of Spain filled in for Andrew Jacobson, who served a one-game suspension for a red card against the Chicago Fire. Alvarez was especially dangerous in the first half with penetrating runs up the middle of the field, and earned positive marks for his performance.

“I thought he did very well, particularly in the first half,” NYCFC coach Jason Kreis said after the game. “He was really, really bright and made good decisions on when to turn and go at their back four. He made some nice passes and had some decent attempts in and around the box. He was a bright spot for me tonight.”

Alvarez, who made his debut as a late second-half substitute in a 1-0 loss against the Portland Timbers on April 19, nearly set up the first goal against the Sounders early when he made a darting run in the sixth minute and fed Patrick Mullins, who crossed to Khiry Shelton. But the rookie’s shot was inches wide of the far post.

On another play in the 36th minute, Alvarez cut the ball back onto his right foot at the edge of the area, but his rising shot went high and wide of the top right corner of the net. It was one of three shots on the game for him.

Alvarez was pleased to get the start, but was disappointed in the club’s third consecutive loss that stretched its winless streak to seven games.

“I always try to help the team. The coach has confidence in me to play today and I just try to help the team,” Alvarez said. “I’m not happy because the most important thing for us was to win. We have to look forward to the next game.”

Alvarez, who played with Villa at Sporting Gijon, consulted Villa about playing for the expansion team, but said ultimately the decision was an easy one.

“This is an amazing club and an amazing opportunity for me,” Alvarez said. “I came here for a trial and I worked hard for the chance to stay here. Now I’m here and I will try to help the team in everything I can do.”
