Gold Cup: Canada draws Costa Rica, Jamaica and El Salvador in Group B, set to play in Toronto

Canada’s path back to the Gold Cup knockout rounds will go through Toronto, with Les Rouges set to play their third and final group stage match on July 14 against Costa Rica at BMO Field.

The game against Costa Rica in Toronto on July 14 will be part of the first-ever Gold Cup matchday played in Canada and it follows the other Group B match between Jamaica and El Salvador.

Canada, which hasn’t advanced to the Gold Cup knockout rounds since 2009, will begin their tournament on July 8 at StubHub Center against El Salvador. Group B will move from LA to Houston for its second round of matches, with Canada facing off against Jamaica on July 11 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Canada’s Group B opponents have a decent history in the Gold Cup, with Costa Rica advancing to the quarterfinals all 11 times they’ve participated in the tournament, Jamaica earning a quarterfinal berth in their last Gold Cup appearance in 2011 and El Salvador reaching the quarters of the last two tournaments.

Should Canada place in the top two of Group B, they would play in the quarterfinals at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on July 19. Finishing as one of the tournament’s top-two third-place teams would see them play the winner of the USA’s Group A at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on July 18 or the winner of Mexico’s Group C in the Meadowlands on July 19.

The semifinals will be played at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on July 22. The third-place match and final will both be played in Philadelphia, with the consolation contest set for July 25 at PPL Park and the title game scheduled for July 26 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Canada has a middling history at the Gold Cup, winning the tournament in 2000, but failing to advance out of the group stage in four of the six tournaments since 2003.
