GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Young playmaker Jesus Vazquez assisted the only goal as Leones Negros recorded a historic 1-0 victory over Liga MX champions Club América in Estadio Azteca on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Los Angeles native had dropped deep from his No. 10 role in the 32nd minute and picked out Luis Telles, who struck a shot into the net from just outside the penalty area.

It was Vazquez’s second start for Leones Negros in Mexico’s top division and he went 70 minutes as his team slightly improved its relegation situation.

For América, Ventura Alvarado played at left back, with coach Gustavo Matosas shifting his formation to a flat back four.

There was a third straight victory for Michael Orozco and Puebla, who overcome Ronaldinho’s Queretaro 4-1, with the defender going the full 90 minutes at right back.

Herculez Gomez was left on the bench for the win, which improved Puebla to 14 points from its eight games of the Clausura.

In the Estadio Jalisco, it was a night to forget for Edgar Castillo, with his depleted Atlas side falling 3-0 to Veracruz. Eight regular Atlas starters had been rested with a massive Copa Libertadores clash looking on March 4 at Colo Colo in Chile.

In the Ascenso MX, Juan Pablo Ocegueda completed 90 minutes in Alebrijes de Oaxaca’s 2-1 win against Correcaminos.
