American Exports: Jonathan Bornstein continues Queretaro resurgence with full 90 vs. Monterrey

Jonathan Bornstein speaks to Mexican media

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Jonathan Bornstein started his first Liga MX game since October 2012 on Saturday as Querétaro lost 2-1 to Monterrey in Estadio Tecnológico.

The former Chivas USA defender was solid at left back for Gallos Blancos, building on his comeback midweek against San Luis in the Copa MX.

Bornstein came up against Mexico international right winger Pablo Barrera, who featured for El Tri last time Bornstein played for the United States at the 2011 Gold Cup.

The result puts Bornstein’s side – without Ronaldinho due to a stomach complaint – under pressure and down in 15th position in the Liga MX Clausura table after seven matches, with reports from Mexico suggesting coach Ignacio Ambriz’s position may be under threat.

The 30-year-old Bornstein missed a large part of the second half of 2014 and early 2015 due to injury and a family bereavement, but recently suggested a move back to MLS could be a possibility in the future.

In Mexico’s second division, Juan Pablo Ocegueda went 90 minutes in Alebrijes de Oaxaca’s 1-0 road win over Zacatepec, while Sonny Guadarrama came off the bench in the 39th in Atlante’s 3-0 away loss to San Luis.

Finally, Emanuel Guzman completed the full match as Merida drew 1-1 at Celaya.
