NEW YORK – The Grand Finale is rapidly approaching.
Fans had three days to decide which nominees advanced to the next round, and here they are, the top eight Latino players who will be competing in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Latino del Año, presented by U.S. Army.
The dominance of Costa Ricans, which had set the tone in the previous stages, diminished considerably in this round, as two Ticos did not qualify to the next phase. Costa Rican fans, however, continued supporting Real Salt Lake star and 2013 Latino del Año winner Álvaro Saborío. Once again, Guatemalan midfielder Marco Pappa obtained the highest percentage of the overall votes in this round.
Players who obtained the highest number of votes in the Round of 16 matchups have advanced to the quarterfinals, where eight players are paired in the knockout stage. The quarterfinal pairings are as follows:
F1: Érick Torres (Chivas USA) vs Waylon Francis (Columbus Crew)
F2: Jaime Penedo (LA Galaxy) vs Álvaro Saborío (Real Salt Lake)
F3: Pedro Morales (Vancouver Whitecaps) vs Marcelo Sarvas (LA Galaxy)
F4: Gonzalo Pineda (Seattle Sounders) vs Marco Pappa (Seattle Sounders)
Quarterfinal voting starts today and will close on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 11:59 pm ET. The player who receives the most votes in each pairing will advance to the Grand Finale, which will be composed of the last four players battling for the 2014 Latino del Año crown.
