Midfielders galore; 2014 Latino del Año's Group E is up for grabs

Group E in the voting for 2014 Latino del Año, presented by U.S. Army, appears to have a clear favorite due to the extraordinary year this footballer has had, which has set the spotlight on him. Of course that is Guatemalan Marco Pappa, but the opposition represented by two Argentines and one Brazilian is gambling on an upset. The rivalry in this group is exclusivly for technically-gifted midfielders.

Here are the nominees for Group E:

Jugador Club Desempeño

Marco Pappa

29 GP, 6 G, 5 A

The Guatemalan has gotten his football revenge on the collective and individual levels at Seattle following his disappointing time in Europe. He has already lifted two trophies this year and is on his way to a third – MLS Cup. Individually, Pappa has shone like never before: won Latino de la Jornada three times, chosen Player of the Week in MLS in the last round of the regular season, and has scored relevant goals – including one in the Cascadia Rivalry vs. Portland and a masterpiece goal against the Rapids. He also won the Golden Ball and Boot in Copa Centroamericana, where he led Guatemala to the final.

Latino de la Jornada: Weeks 13, 18, 30

Mauro Rosales

21 GP (Chivas USA); 11 GP (Vancouver Whitecaps)

The veteran Argentine has been in a thousand battles on the pitch, but experience is not all that he brings, as he still has a good amount of soccer talent in his feet. Rosales started the 2014 campaign playing for Chivas USA, where thanks to many of his contributions in the midfield, "Cubo" Torres maintained his top striker status. His trade to Vancouver had a significant impact on the Whitecaps, especially for Pedro Morales, who found a great associate in the midfield. Mauro was key in Vancouver clinching the last spot in the MLS Playoffs, presented by AT&T.

Playoffs: 10/28 vs DAL

Ignacio Piatti

6 GP, 4 G

His arrival in Montreal after taking San Lorenzo to the Copa Libertadores final came a bit late, but with the few games he played for the Impact he has shown he is a quality midfielder. In only six games, he managed to score four goals and was chosen Latino de la Jornada for Week 25. During a key CONCACAF Champions League group match, Piatti made a clinical and decisive assist that helped save what was left on the season for the Canadian club. He then got injured and couldn’t help Montreal to avoid the last place in MLS, but the club's future is encouraging with Piatti on the roster.

Latino de la Jornada: Week 25

Marcelo Sarvas

28 GP, 3 G, 11A

For third year in a row, the Brazilian continues to be a cornerstone in the Galaxy’s midfield. His goalscoring stats won’t impress anyone, but when it comes to assists, Sarvas is among the top 10 in MLS, with 11 to his name. The LA Galaxy are among the favorites to win MLS Cup and such a tag is sustained by a solid midfield guarded by Sarvas, which allows for Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane to shine.

Playoffs: 11/1 vs DAL
