Portland Timbers fans vote for Liam Ridgewell in election he didn't even know about | SIDELINE

Portland Timbers' Liam Ridgewell as an 18th-century president

The offseason has started a bit earlier than the Portland Timbers would have liked after they missed out on qualification for the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Suddenly, 30 players and a coaching staff have a month or more of unexpected free time to fill. So one Timbers player has decided to run for public office in the Rose City — or, something like that.

Defender Liam Ridgewell has a strong backing and has received a large number of votes for the position of Tualatin, Oregon, Soil and Water Conservation District, Zone 5. Only, there's one small problem with that very true fact: Ridgewell didn't know he was running for the position.

In fact, according to Ridgewell, he is in no way officially in the running, but that hasn't stopped Timbers fans from selecting him as a write-in candidate anyway.

"I just saw on my Twitter and I didn't really understand it," Ridgewell told The Oregonian of his unusual candidacy. "As far as I know it's for water? I just think if I was elected I would just make sure that the Tualatin golf course got the right amount of water and right amount of sod to keep my golf efforts going."

Perhaps the hero Tualatin deserves, but not the one it needs right now, Liam Ridgewell is loved dearly in the Rose City.
