Current and former MLSers called in as Central American Cup gears up

Seattle Sounders winger Marco Pappa, LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo and FC Dallas striker Blas Perez highlight the rosters for the seven-nation Central American Cup Tigo 2014 USA, beginning Wednesday in Washington D.C.


CONCACAF released the full rosters for all six teams on Monday, and along with Pappa (Guatemala), Penedo (Panama) and Perez (Panama), Vancouver Whitecaps defender Jonny Leveron (Honduras) and Portland Timbers winger Rodney Wallace (Costa Rica) have also been called in for the tournament.


Other notable former MLS players set to compete include Mario Martinez (Honduras), Arturo Alvarez (El Salvador) and 2002 league MVP Carlos Ruiz (Guatemala).


The two-group tournament begins Wednesday at RFK Stadium in with a triple-header featuring Costa Rica taking on Nicaragua, followed by Honduras facing Belize and El Salvador against Guatemala.


The championship game, as well as the third- and fifth-place matches, will be played on Sept. 13 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.


The four top finishers in the tournament will earn automatic berths in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The fifth-place finisher earns the right to participate in a two-leg playoff against the fifth-place team from the 2014 Caribbean Football Union Caribbean Cup, for a further Gold Cup berth.
