World Cup: Costa Rica take shock 1-0 first-half lead vs. Italy in Group D matchup

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto points skyward after Bryan Ruiz's opening goal against Italy.

Mighty England are shaking in their boots.

With one minute left in the first half, tiny Costa Rica took a shock lead against Italy in a critical Group D matchup in Recife. Captain Bryan Ruiz headed home a Junior Diaz cross against the crossbar and goal-line technology confirmed the ball crossed the line in its entirey.

The Ticos didn't look out of place against the four-time World Cup champions and, just a few minutes before, they arguably should have earned a penalty kick when forward Joel Campbell was brought down in the box by Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. But referee Enrique Osses didn't call it.

With a win, Costa Rica go through to the second round against all odds and England is mathematically eliminated.
