AMSTERDAM – Sheffield Wednesday free agent Oguchi Onyewu says he is weighing multiple offers, including an extension deal from the Owls.
The 32-year-old center back notched a goal and two assists in 19 games across all competitions this spring for the Championship outfit, who grabbed him on a free transfer from eventual-promotion winners Queens Park Rangers in January. Onyewu's contract expires at the end of the month, but he recently told a local daily that he could be back.
"Right now no decisions have been made, but I'm aiming to stay in the UK," Onyewu told the Sheffield Star. "It's always a possibility that I will stay at Wednesday, but I want to weigh my options up before I make I final decision. Who knows, maybe I'll have the opportunity to play for Newcastle again. You never know."
It remains unclear whether the last reference to his former loan employers was a hint at current interest from the Premier League Magpies or a random example. Having left Clemson University to sign with Metz in France, Onyewu has never played in Major League Soccer. A native of Washington, D.C., Onyewu stated last summer that his preference would be to join hometown club D.C. United.
This past season, Wednesday were in the drop zone when the American joined at the winter break after having failed to appear for QPR. Onyewu then helped the Owls log nine wins and seven shutouts as they finished nine points above the trap door in 16th place.
