We're into single digits — just nine days until the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. And hopefully the events in the land of Jogo Bonito don't cause the same property damage that occurred in the household of New York Red Bulls star Thierry Henry the day of the 1982 World Cup semifinal between France and West Germany.
The epic match finished 3-3 and the Germans would win on penalty kicks, but the final result did not erase this indelible memory for Henry:
My first memory of the World Cup was Marius Tresor scoring in the semifinal of the 1982 World Cup [in the 2nd minute of extratime to put France up 2-1] … I was young. I was five years old.
I wasn't actually noticing what was happening, to be honest. But all I remember was everybody jumping in the house and breaking everything. And I remember turning and looking at the TV and seeing the replay of the goal.
I thought the house was going to explode. [Tresor] is from the West Indies and I was in the West Indies at the time on vacation and the house nearly exploded. That's how I remember it. I was like, "What?"
