Canadian Exports: Iain Hume helps Fleetwood Town earn promotion in League Two playoff

Another year, another promotion for Iain Hume.

The Canadian veteran played 86 minutes for Fleetwood Town (in his final game of a loan spell) in Monday’s League Two playoff final at Wembley Stadium, a 1-0 win over Burton Albion that clinched promotion for the Cod Army. Last season, Hume – on loan from Preston North End – was with Doncaster Rovers when they moved up from League One to the Championship.

There was also good news on the promotion front for a pair of potential Canadian internationals.

Queens Park Rangers earned their way back to the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Derby County in the Championship playoff final on Saturday. David Hoilett – who was born in Toronto but has yet to represent any national team – went the full 90, while Michael Petrasso – who was with Canada’s Under-20 team last week – will also be under contract at QPR next year.

While the season is over in most European leagues – and, accordingly, for most Canadian exports – there are a few others who saw action in the past seven days.

In Finland's second flight, David Monsalve got the start in goal for AC Oulu on Friday in a 2-1 loss to Jippo Joensuu, while teammate Dominic Oppong went the full 90 in midfield.

Another young goalkeeper, Julian Latendresse-Levesque, finished the season in Germany on a decent note, playing in Lokomotive Leipzig’s 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin II on Saturday.

In Japan, defender Dejan Jakovic went the full 90 in a pair of games for Shimizu S-Pulse, in a win last Wednesday and a loss on Saturday. Fellow defender Roger Thompson had a similarly busy week, along putting two full-90 performances for IFK Mariehamn in a pair of draws on Friday and Monday in the Finnish Premier Division.
