In blustery conditions, goals and drama were everywhere on the opening day of the 2014 Generation adidas Cup Monday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
After the first three games of the International Division produced a combined seven goals, the final two games both went to shootouts, including a wild ending to the New York-Seattle game. Two of the four Domestic Division games also went to shootouts.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with a full slate of games, including a prime-time televised clash between two teams that both started 1-0, Real Salt Lake and England’s Stoke City, streamed live at 9 pm ET on MLSsoccer.com.

International Division
Chivas Guadalajara 0, San Jose Earthquakes 0 (Chivas won shootout 5-4)
The exception to the ‘goals’ rule came in the nightcap, as 15-year-old Chivas goalkeeper Miguel Guzmán made six saves to deny a sharp San Jose Earthquakes side a regulation win. In the shootout, the first eight shooters converted before a miss opened the door for Guadalajara to take an extra point in the standings.

New York Red Bulls 1, Seattle Sounders 1 (New York won shootout 4-3)
In the most exciting finish of the day, the Red Bulls tied the game in the fifth minute of stoppage time on a goal directly from a corner kick, then went on to win the shootout to get the upper hand on Seattle. The Sounders had opened the scoring in the 60th minute (of a 70-minute game) while attacking into a stiff wind that affected each of the game’s days. Defender Tosh Samkange headed in a corner kick from Diego Silvas to put Seattle in front.
But after some minor injuries and delays produced three minutes of stoppage time that crept into a fifth minute due to further delays, New York took advantage on a corner kick of its own. Desperate to tie the score, New York goalkeeper Tom Lapinas personally fronted Sounders goalkeeper R.J. Noll and proved enough of a distraction that an inswinging corner kick from Chris Flores found its way through traffic to curl in at the far post, presumably also aided by the wind, and give New York a dramatic tie.
Lapinas then made two saves in the shootout, besting Noll’s one stop, and Ethan Lochner converted the final penalty kick in a 4-3 win.

Stoke City 2, LA Galaxy 0
An unlikely hero lifted Stoke City to an impressive 2-0 win over the LA Galaxy in the first game by a foreign club in Generation adidas Cup history. After a scoreless first half, right back Lewis Banks capitalized on a loose ball following a corner kick in the 37th minute, rifling a left-footed shot into the back of the net from the top of the penalty area. Banks then helped Stoke put the game away in the 62nd minute, heading an Ollie Shenton corner back across goal, where forward Charles Weston-Hayles one-touched it home. Even a second yellow card late in the game did not take the shine of a strong debut from Stoke, which came out in a 4-2-3-1 formation rarely seen by its parent club.

Real Salt Lake 2, Toronto FC 1
One of the tournament favorites, Real Salt Lake matched Stoke’s 1-0 start with a 2-1 win over Toronto FC. With newly signed professional Justen Glad starting at center back, Salt Lake looked much more experienced in the early going and took the lead when Evan Waldrep set up Canadian youth international Josh Doughty for an early goal in the 20th minute. Glad’s co-captain, Sebastian Saucedo, converted a second half penalty kick for a 2-0 lead before Jordan Montoya pulled a goal back for Toronto.
