AMSTERDAM – Aron Jóhannsson failed to convert a penalty kick for the second time in five days and it cost KNVB Cup champs AZ Alkmaar, who saw their title defense halted by a 1-0 home loss to nearby rivals Ajax on Thursday.
The US forward stepped to the spot in the 33rd minute, following Ajax defender Joel Veltman's ejection for a second yellow card. Kenneth Vermeer was able to stop Jóhannsson's penalty try and AZ teammate Mattias Johansson was sent off with a second booking to even up the numbers just after halftime.
Lasse Schöne hit the winner a minute after the hosts were dropped to 10 men and Jóhannsson was eventually removed in the 64th minute.
