American Exports: Blackpool will not offer former MLS starlet Freddy Adu a contract

Freddy Adu talks to Blackpool's Tangerine TV

Freddy Adu’s career odyssey will not include a formal stop in Blackpool after all.

The Blackpool Gazette has reported that the English Championship squad will not offer the former MLS and US national team starlet a contract after three weeks in camp, but he will stay in training with the club to raise his fitness as he looks for a deal elsewhere.

“There is nothing happening with Freddy,” Blackpool manager Barry Ferguson said. “He’s come in and worked hard with us. He is a great lad but I’m more than happy with what I’ve got. I have a strong squad.”

Adu, 24, showed up in England earlier this month in search of a new club after he was released by Brazilian side Bahia last November. He left the Philadelphia Union in April 2013 after a falling out with the club. He has not featured for the United States at any level since the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament.
