The ordeal over where US World Cup hopeful Fabian Johnson will play after this season is over.
On Monday, Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that the Hoffenheim left-sided player will join them this summer on a free transfer. The contract will run until 2018.
“Fabian Johnson is a very interesting player, moreover he is a free agent, who can play at left-back and at left-midfield,” Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl told Borussia.de. "We are delighted that he has opted to play for us."
Johnson, 26, has been in flux about where he would play next season following his decision this winter not to extend his contract with Hoffenheim.
He was also reportedly chased by clubs in England and Italy but has decided to stay in Germany, where he grew up and has spent his entire career. Before joining Hoffenheim in 2011, Johnson played for three seasons with Wolfsburg. He spent his early career with 1860 Munich.
In total, Johnson has made 91 Bundesliga appearances and has scored 6 goals.
Coincidentally or not, Hoffenheim and Gladbach met over the weekend, and Johnson turned in a strong performance in a 2-2 draw. Afterward, before the news was official but with rumors rampant of a potential move to 'Gladbach, Johnson told the media that the game “not been different to any other match."
Internationally, Johnson has become a regular for Jurgen Klinsmann's US national team since making his debut in November 2011. He now has 18 caps for the US, including six appearances during last year's FIFA World Cup qualifying CONCACAF Hexagonal.
