The Chivas USA makeover continues.
New head coach Wilmer Cabrera added his third midfielder of the offseason on Wednesday when the club announced the signing of Argentine midfielder Agustín Pelletieri, who had been training with the club since the second week of preseason.
"Agustín is a very experienced and important player who will be an asset to our team," Cabrera said in a club statement. "He has been a captain for a very important club in Argentina for the past four years, so he brings leadership on and off the field, which is a very important aspect for us to try to get the results we need this season."
Pelletieri, 31, spent the last three years with Racing in Argentina's top division after spending most of his career with Lanús. He also spent one season on loan with AEK Athens.
Pelletieri joins Mauro Rosales as key midfield acquisitions for Chivas USA this offseason, and the club also signed draft pick Thomas McNamara last week. In Sunday's preseason game against the Colorado Rapids, Pelletieri started with Rosales, McNamara and Oswaldo Minda but left the game in the 12th minute.
"Technically, he is a very smart player who knows his position well," Cabrera said. "He is fantastic at reading the game and has a very good idea of how to win, possess and distribute the ball. He is a well-rounded player in all aspects."
Chivas USA opens play in the Desert Diamond Cup on Wednesday afternoon against FC Tucson.
