American Exports: Aron Johannsson scores again, Clint Dempsey tumbles in FA Cup

Aron Johannsson celebrates a goal for AZ Alkmaar

AMSTERDAM – Aron Jóhannsson bagged his 21st goal of the campaign before leaving at halftime with a knock as AZ Alkmaar scored a 2-0 victory at Vitesse on Tuesday.

The US forward first helped get the visitors on the scoreboard in the 20th minute, when his goalmouth feed was turned in by Vitesse defender Patrick van Aanholt. Shortly after being robbed, Jóhannsson found the net the old-fashioned way three minutes before intermission, deftly lobbing the keeper from 18 yards after the home center backs misplayed a long ball.

Jóhannsson actually connected for his 13th Eredivisie goal of the season after suffering an apparent thigh injury midway through the frame. He would be replaced at the break, but did enough damage before departing to help sixth-place AZ record their fourth shutout win in five games across all competitions.

Over in England's FA Cup, Clint Dempsey and Fulham were bounced from the tournament by visiting Sheffield United's 1-0 winner in the 120th minute.

The on-loan Seattle Sounders attacker went the distance, but was unable to put any of his three shots on target. Dempsey also had a decent penalty shout ignored a minute before extras.
