Sporting KC television ad, featuring fan-shot footage of MLS Cup victory

Sporting Kansas City debuted locally their first round of television commercials (above playlist) for the upcoming 2014 season on Sunday night, during the Grammys.

The focus, of course, was the club's 2013 MLS Cup win, only they took a slightly different approach to the footage used to create the ads.

A full house of 21,650 soccer fans packed inside Sporting Park on Dec. 7 of last year to see Sporting KC lift the Cup final after 10 rounds of penalty kicks, which means probably thousands of fans captured the final kick of the MLS season — that of Lovel Palmer, off the crossbar — on their smartphones, tablets and digital cameras.

So Sporting turned a handful of those countless recording spectators' footage, posted on various social media outlets, into commercial footage.

The result was something best described as "simple, yet effective." The ads were surely a hit with the coveted 18- to 24-year-old demographic, as well as anyone else in the stadium that night, looking to relive the championship moment.
