The US national team has famously lost to Ghana in the past two FIFA World Cup tournaments, including being eliminated by the Black Stars in 2010 in the Round of 16.
So when the USMNT and Ghana were pitted against each other again in December's draw along with Germany and Portugal in Group G, there was a collective gasp/sigh from American fans across the world.
Ghana again? Really?
That reaction wasn't limited to the red, white, and blue side. The Black Stars responded similarly.
“I didn’t even think about Germany and Portugal," Ghana midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah told Goal.com recently. "What came into my mind was: 'These USA people again?'"
Asamoah, 25, went 90 minutes for Ghana in the 2-1 victory over the Americans in Rustenburg in 2010. The match finished 1-1 in regulation time and was eventually won in added extratime through Asamoah Gyan's 93rd-minute strike.
Asamoah, who currently stars for reigning Italian champions Juventus, expects a similarly difficult match this time around.
“I think it is going to be war because they won’t sit back to lose three times to Ghana,” he said. “There is no group favourite. Individuals don’t matter in football anymore but how the team plays on the field.”
