American Exports: Oguchi Onyewu signs with English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday

AMSTERDAM – Oguchi Onyewu has traded one English Championship shirt for another, signing a deal through the end of the season with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 31-year-old, who did not see any match time during a three-month contract with Queens Park Rangers, moves from a third-place title chaser with the best defense in the league to one currently four points above the drop zone. However, Wednesday are coming off their biggest win of the season thus far, a 6-0 humbling of Leeds United that gave them consecutive league wins for the first time this term.

Playing time should be easier to come by at Hillsborough, where caretaker boss Stuart Gray has just waved goodbye to loan center back Roger Johnson. A field appearance would make Onyewu the fourth American to play for the Owls, following John Harkes, Frank Simek and Stuart Holden.

Wednesday get back to work with an midweek FA Cup third-round replay at home to Macclesfield Town and then a league match at second-place Burnley on Saturday.
