Edgar Castillo in action for Club Tijuana

American Exports: Edgar Castillo assists on winning goal in Xolos victory over Club América

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – US international Edgar Castillo crossed for Argentine Cristian Pellerano to drive home Club Tijuana’s only goal in the 87th minute in the institution’s first-ever home victory over Club América on Friday night on the second matchday in the Liga MX Clausura 2014.

Castillo was played in down the left channel and his low, deflected cross rolled into Pellerano’s path to score, although the New Mexico native should’ve netted himself in the 70th minute when fellow Yank Joe Corona put him clean through on goal, but the left back shot with the outside of his boot straight at ‘keeper Moisés Muñoz.

The 1-0 victory was fully deserved, with Xolos getting the better of the Clausura 2013 champions over the 90 minutes, with Corona, Herculez Gomez and Castillo all starting the game.

Gomez – playing as a central striker – came close to providing Tijuana’s first goal when his driven cross in the 22nd minute fell into the path of Ecuadorian Fidel Martínez, but his back-heeled effort was saved by Muñoz.

Corona was nominally positioned on left of midfield but drifted inside at will and was a positive for Xolos, causing problems floating in the space between América’s defense and midfield. In the 59th minute, he rode a challenge, sold a defender a faint on the edge of the area and hit a left shot against the post in a confident performance.

But the San Diego native’s evening didn’t end on a positive note as he was forced off the field in the 81st minute with an injury and hobbled back to the locker room.

Paul Arriola entered in his place, featuring down the right wing, while Gomez was taken off in the 68th minute.

Earlier Friday, Ventura Alvarado and Sonny Guadarrama both went 90 minutes in Necaxa’s 2-1 victory at Lobos BUAP in the Ascenso MX.

For the home side, neither Marco Vidal nor Daniel Cuevas saw playing time.
