SuperDraft: Maryland's Patrick Mullins wins Hermann Trophy for second straight season

Patrick Mullins in action with Maryland

He’s currently working on starting his professional soccer career on the right foot at the MLS Player Combine in Lauderdale, Fla., but Maryland senior Patrick Mullins was honored one last time for his college career.

Mullins, along with Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian, were on Friday named the 2013 winners of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, given to the top male and female players in NCAA Division I soccer. It’s the second straight time the prolific forward was handed the award, becoming the seventh player to win back-to-back Hermann Trophies.

The New Orleans native capped his senior season at Maryland with 19 goals and eight assists. He finished his career second in Terps men’s soccer history with 47 goals and 119 points. He is a two-time First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference player; a two-time All-ACC Championship Most Valuable Player; a two-time NSCAA All-American; and a 2013 College Cup All-Tournament Team honoree.

Mullins led the Terps to a nation-best 13th straight NCAA Round of 16 in the 2013 tournament and captured the ACC regular season and tournament titles for the second consecutive season.

First runner-up for the men’s award was Notre Dame senior forward Harrison Shipp, who was recently signed to a Homegrown contract by the Chicago Fire, followed by UCLA junior midfielder Leo Stolz.

The trophy winners were decided by a vote of NCAA Division I soccer coaches that are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), along with a weighted fan vote.
